Neutron capture therapy research in Australia

Neutron capture therapy research in Australia has continued to grow since the first Australia-Japan workshop in April, 1986. The support base has broadened and the wide range of contributing laboratories includes universities, research institutes, and hospitals. Considerable progress has been made in boron chemistry--an accurate boron assay technique has been developed, boron analogues of chlorpromazine and thiouracil have been synthesised or nearly so, and decaborane conjugation with monoclonal antibodies has been achieved to the required loadings. In vitro cell survival experiments are proceeding in the Moata reactor using human melanoma and mouse cell lines incubated with enriched boronophenylalanine and boron tetraphenyl porphyrins. Electron microscopy examination of radiation damaged morphology shows considerable differences between cell lines. Progress with the nude mouse human melanoma model has been slow because of the lack of a reliable in vivo melanotic melanoma line, and the B16 mouse line is found to be more efficacious. Tailored beam calculations for the 10 MW HIFAR reactor indicate the difficulty of obtaining a suitable therapeutic beam because of the generated gamma dose in the beam filters. A new approach to NCT utilises the enormous cross section of 157Gd and the induced-Auger effect which has been shown to cause double strand breaks in circular DNA.     

Isomeric, anti-rhamnose antibodies having specificity for rhamnose-containing, streptococcal heteroglycans

L-Rhamnose (6-deoxy-L-mannose) is a constituent carbohydrate unit of microbial, immunogenic heteroglycans and lipopolysaccharides, and often functions as the immunodeterminant group of such immunogens. Two types of anti-rhamnose antibody have now been isolated by affinity chromatography of immune sera obtained from rabbits immunized with vaccines of Streptococcus mutans, strain KI-R, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, type 32. The antibodies of one type were directed at a glycan of L-rhamnose, D-glucose, and D-galactose in the cell wall of S. mutans, and those of the other type, against a capsular glycan of L-rhamnose and D-glucose from S. pneumoniae. The two types of anti-rhamnose antibody were immunologically distinct, and showed no reciprocal cross-reactivity. Additional properties of the two types of antibody were determined; thus, both types of antibody were of the IgG class of immunoglobulins, both possessed molecular weights of 1.45 X 10(5), and both consisted of multiple or isomeric forms.     

An alternative explanation for phase transitions observed in quick frozen calcium cardiolipin solution

It is demonstrated that the phase changes reported for a quick frozen calcium cardiolipin solution containing CaCl₂ are virtually identical to those seen in pure CaCl₂. This introduces uncertainty as to whether the data in fact reflect the behavior of cardiolipin or of the associated CaCl₂.     

Comparison of Canavanyl-Envelope Proteins to Normal Envelope Proteins

Electrophoretic analysis showed arginine- and canavanine-containing envelope proteins to be qualitatively the same. Quantitative differences may be due to rapid degradation of some canavanine-containing envelope proteins.
